Looking after it

Replace a helmet after any real impact, even if it looks fine: the foam crushes on the inside and does not come back. Wash the pads by hand and let them dry; do not put a helmet in a machine or near a radiator.

Seven PiecesHelmet plus knee, elbow and wrist pairs
Sized By Head50 to 62 cm across four sizes
EVA LinedHard cups over soft EVA, velcro straps
Vented ShellPVC and PC shell over EPS foam

Seven pieces: helmet, two knee, two elbow, two wrist.

A full pad set with a vented helmet, sized by head measurement from 50 cm to 62 cm. No safety standard is published for it, and we say so.

Everything a beginner needs to fall over, in one box.

Seven pieces: a helmet, two knee pads, two elbow pads and two wrist guards, packed in a gift box with a mesh pocket.

The pads are hard plastic cups over soft EVA foam, held on with adjustable velcro straps. The helmet is a PVC and PC shell over EPS foam with vents through it.

Sizing runs off the head measurement rather than age: Small 50 to 54 cm, Medium 55 to 57 cm, Large 58 to 61 cm and X-Large 59 to 62 cm.

The live listing publishes no EN safety standard for any piece in the set, so we do not claim a protection rating. If a certified helmet is what you need, this is not it, and we would rather tell you that here than after you have ordered.

Not sure yet? That is fine.

You can change your mind. Under the Consumer Contracts Regulations 2013 you have 14 days from delivery to cancel for any reason, and a further 14 days to send it back in resaleable condition. We refund the price you paid, including standard delivery. No product here is cut, built or configured to a customer's measurement, so that right applies to everything on this site.

If it turns up faulty, damaged or not as described, that is on us. The Consumer Rights Act 2015 covers you, we pay the return postage, and you can have a repair, a replacement or your money back. Read the full detail on our refunds and returns page, or ask us anything before you order.

Is Safety Gear For Skateboarding only for tricks and ramps?

Buying Guide

What we can and cannot tell you about protection

Protective equipment is normally sold against a standard. For cycle helmets in the UK and Europe that is usually EN 1078, and the standard is what turns "protective" from a description into a measurement.

The listing for this set cites no standard, for the helmet or for the pads. We are not going to invent one. So what this page claims is what the set physically is: a hard shell over foam, and hard cups over foam on the joints. If you specifically need a certified helmet, buy one that states its certification, and we would rather say that plainly than sell you this one on a claim we cannot support.

Fit is what makes a helmet work

A helmet that moves is a helmet that is not there when you land. Measure round the head just above the eyebrows and use the number, not the age guide: children's heads vary enormously at the same age.

Sitting level, the rim should be about two fingers above the eyebrows. The side straps should form a V under the ears. The chin strap should be tight enough that opening your mouth wide pulls on the helmet. If you can rock it back off the forehead, it is too loose or too big.

Wrists are the ones people skip

Nearly everyone falls forwards onto their hands. Wrist guards are the least glamorous piece in the box and statistically the busiest, particularly for beginners on skates.

They should sit with the splint under the palm and the strap firm without cutting off feeling in the fingers.

After a fall

Pads brush off and carry on. A helmet does not. EPS foam works by crushing, and once it has crushed it stays crushed, so a helmet that has taken a real impact has already done its job even if the shell looks perfect. Replace it.

The same goes for a helmet that has been dropped hard onto concrete from height, and for one that has spent two summers on a parcel shelf: heat and sunlight degrade the foam and the shell.

Looking after the set

Hand wash the pads and let them air dry. Do not machine wash the helmet or leave it near a radiator. Straps and buckles are worth a look every few weeks, because a frayed strap is the part that fails silently.
