Looking after it

Dry it before you put it away, especially round the battery hatch. It floats and it is water resistant, which is not the same as sealed.

An LED disc that floats, so the game does not stop at dusk.

A 27 cm light up flying disc with a fibre optic array, water resistant and floating, running about 20 hours on two replaceable 2016 cells.

The disc that keeps the game going after the light has gone.

An LED array feeds a fibre optic ring, so the whole disc glows rather than a single bulb blinking somewhere in the middle. From a distance you can see the flight, which is the part that matters when you are trying to catch it.

It floats and it is water resistant, so a throw into a pond is a wet walk rather than a lost disc.

The batteries are two 2016 lithium cells with roughly a 20 hour life, and they are replaceable rather than sealed in.

It measures 27 cm across and weighs 0.26 kg. Blue, red and green are one price; the Disc-o Select finish costs a little more.

Not sure yet? That is fine.

Buying Guide

A lit disc is a different game, not a gimmick

Throwing in the dark sounds like a novelty until you try it. The flight of a lit disc is far easier to read than a white disc in daylight, because you are following a moving light rather than picking a shape out of a background. Catching gets easier, not harder.

It also buys back the hours between autumn dusk and bedtime, which in this country is most of the evening for half the year.

Fibre optic against a single LED

Cheap light up discs put one or two LEDs under a translucent shell, and what you see from thirty metres is a flicker. A fibre optic array carries the light around the disc so the whole rim is bright, and the flight path reads as a line rather than a blink.

That is the difference worth paying for on a disc like this.

Floating matters more than it sounds

Water is where discs go to be lost. This one floats and the housing is water resistant, so a throw that lands in a pond or a lake is recoverable. Two practical notes: water resistant is not sealed, so dry the disc afterwards and pay attention to the battery hatch, and a wet disc is a slippery disc for the next few throws.

Batteries you can actually replace

The cells are two 2016 lithium, which are ordinary coin cells you can buy anywhere, and the disc is built to have them changed rather than thrown away. About 20 hours of light is a lot of evenings.

Keep a spare pair somewhere with the disc. They always run out at the far end of a field.

Throwing it well

At 0.26 kg this is on the light side for a golf disc, which is what makes it good for catch and means it is affected by wind more than a heavy driver. Throw it flatter than you think, and into a headwind aim lower: a light disc pushed up by wind climbs, stalls and drops behind you.
