Wipe the wheels and check the axle bolts every few outings. Bearings hate water, so skate round puddles rather than through them, and dry the wheels if you get caught out.

Three Part FasteningLaces, 45 degree strap and a buckle

Four sizes in one boot, adjustable in half centimetre steps.

Light up wheels with no batteries, ABEC-7 bearings, 82A polyurethane wheels and a three part fastening. Sized 28.5 to 41 EU across three ranges.

Skates that keep fitting while a child's feet do what children's feet do.

Each boot adjusts through four positions in half centimetre steps, so one pair covers a growth spurt rather than a season.

The wheels flash as they turn and there is no battery in them: the movement generates the light, so there is nothing to charge and nothing to run flat.

Underneath, they are a proper skate: ABEC-7 bearings, 82A polyurethane wheels, an aluminium frame and a rubber stopper.

The fastening is three parts, laces, a 45 degree strap and a buckle, which is what actually holds an ankle steady.

Not sure yet? That is fine.

Buying Guide

Adjustable is not a compromise any more

Adjustable skates used to mean rattly skates. That is no longer true, and the reason to buy them is straightforward arithmetic: a child's foot can move two sizes in a year, and a fixed boot that fits in April is a doorstop by Christmas.

Four positions in half centimetre steps means the boot can be tuned to the foot rather than jumped a whole size at a time.

Fit them properly the first time

Toes should just brush the end with the boot done up and the heel back. If the foot slides forward when the child rocks onto the toes, the fastening is not tight enough, and a sliding heel is what causes blisters and lost confidence.

Do the laces first, then the strap, then the buckle. In that order the ankle ends up held; in any other order the buckle does all the work and none of it holds.

What the numbers on the wheels mean

ABEC-7 describes the bearing tolerance: higher numbers roll more freely. 82A is the wheel hardness, which sits in the middle of the range and is a sensible compromise between grip on rough tarmac and speed on smooth.

Neither number matters much at learning speed. They matter a lot once a child is confident, because a cheap bearing is what makes a skate feel like hard work.

The lights, and why they need no battery

The wheels contain a small generator driven by the wheel's own rotation, so they light while rolling and stop when you stop. There is nothing to charge and nothing to replace, and the light cannot be left on in a bag.

It is a genuine safety benefit at dusk as well as a selling point to an eight year old.

Skate with pads

Everyone falls while learning, mostly forwards. Wrist guards, knee and elbow pads and a helmet turn that from a bad afternoon into a story. The seven piece set in this range is sized by head measurement and covers all four.

Maintenance is five minutes a month

Check the axle bolts, because they work loose and a loose wheel wobbles. Wipe grit off the wheels. Keep the bearings out of water: puddles are what kill inline skates, and a bearing that has been soaked never runs quietly again.
